Young asian fashion designers showcase outfits for Charity

The Independent. The Passionate. The Enigma. The Activator. The Environmentalist.

If you aspire to be one of the above or believe yourself to be already one, then support the 100X Strut Project, where 100 fashion wear by talented young artists go on display at a series of fashion shows held in town.

This year, 50 young asian fashion designers from the Young Fashion Designers’ Society, Design Schools and Professional youth designers were invited to create outfits inspired by the multifaceted strengths of a woman’s character. The outfits will be auctioned off on eBay in support of the Dove Self Esteem Fund & *Scape!

I was at one of the runway events and amidst the rain; the models were determined to showcase the designs in the name of charity.

The Devil wears Prada….Or does she?

You are going for a job interview. You are determined to look your most professional and land a kill for this job. You dress yourself in a smart, long sleeve Polo Ralph shirt and sleek black pants. You make sure your hair and make-up are impeccable and scrutinize yourself in the mirror for an hour before finally stepping out of your house.

You reach the designated venue 45mins before time. From the looks of it, the company is a small enterprise. There should be little competition for the job opening.

A middle-aged woman in a over-sized white shirt and faded navy jeans greets you with a smile at the reception area and hands you an application form to complete. “What a friendly receptionist”, you thought. After 15 mins, she asks you to follow her to the General Manager’s office. You make a final check of your image through the reflection of a nearby glass panel before walking down the short, narrow corridor leading to the GM’s office.

So there you are finally, ready to ace the interview. But wait … the seat behind the desk is empty! Where is the GM?!

You watch in disbelief (you try to hide your amazement in utter failure) as the friendly ‘receptionist’ takes her seat behind the desk….

Talk about an anti-climax!

In a world that emphasizes about 1st impressions, image, class & professionalism, how weird it is when the subordinate dresses better than the boss?

Unique Dresses

Think your clothes are unique? Take a look at these….

I was invited to give a talk by an organization recently and was presented with a very nice gift as token of appreciation – a mid-length face towel made from Bamboo. Pardon my ignorance, but I was quite amazed then because I never thought bamboo can be a raw material used to produce fabric.

My intrigue led me to do some research on outfits made with unusual material. These are some findingsPaper SuitPaper Suit (Picture from http://www.webstockpro.com)

In the mood for pink (part 1)

I have to admit this: I have a soft spot for Pink. Not the celebrity (though she is cool), but the colour itself. It is a color so pure, like white, only sweeter…much sweeter. And romantic too, like red, only much cooler and gentle to the eyes.

Due to its inherent qualities, Pink is used widely in many fashionable items, including clothing and accessories. Here are some celebrities that look fabulous in Pink:

Now, let me share some examples from my personal collection…let’s start off with a few cocktail outfits:

I simply LOVE this magenta top! The rich details encompassing ruffles, layers and faux pearl buttons (look closely) make this piece an absolute must-have if you are ready to make a statement. I wear this top to the office too (yes, to the office, not kidding!). What I did was to match it with a black blazer & pencil straight skirt/pants and I would look as professional as ever. And straight after work, I just need to take off my blazer and I am all ready to dance & party!Magenta Ruffled top

Tip: To play on the safe side, always match an elaborate top with a simple bottom. Pink ribbon dress

As much as I love black & white, I can’t resist vibrant colors. This dress first attracted my attention because of its color combination – shimmering pink, green, yellow and a bit of white (which I think saves this colorful piece from overwhelming the senses). The ribbon on the dress makes it look really sweet and romantic while the slightly plunging neckline and translucent fabric are definitely sexy. To summarize, a piece that is suitable for a sweet yet sexy look.

I wore this dress to a company’s cocktail event and received loads of thumb-ups! More formal than the previous piece and equally sweet and sexy (if not more so). What I would kill for is however, not the dress but the matching belt. The design of the belt is akin to the Japanese waist-band, which helps to accentuate the curves of a woman full bosom and slender waist when worn. Simply gorgeous.Pink dress with belt

A pretty tube dress with flower & leave prints. Very simple and classic design that should be suitable for most body shapes. I love the floral prints… remind me of a meadow full of sweet-smelling lilies. What can be more delightful than that?Pink Tube dress

If  Pink has never been a color you would consider wearing, perhaps you would like to give it a try after reading this article?

Christmas Party Outfit Tips

With Christmas around the corner, finding the outfit for the numerous parties we need to attend can be a headache.

Here are some tips…

1)     Be a sport and stick to the dress code, if there is one. Everyone loves a team player.

2)     When there is no clear-cut theme, opt for safe attire both in design and colour. Only put on flashy accessories if wearing a simple outfit. You do not want to BE the Christmas tree!

3)     Feel free to experiment creatively with colors and designs (at least 2 days before the party), but be sure to choose what suits your skin tone and physique best. What looks good on others may not necessarily look good on you.

4)     “Casual” is not equivalent to “sloppy”. Show respect for the host (who has taken great pains to organize a great party for you) by looking your very best.

5)     Make sure you go for a fitting early. An outfit that is too tight or hemlines that are too high will make you look tarty, not sexy! Clothes that are too small will make you look bigger than you are. Watch out for that bulging waistline!

6)     If you are wearing a low-rise bottom, make sure what you are wearing within is also low-rise. VPL (Visible Panty Line) is a no-no at parties! Also be cautious of VPL if you are wearing thin silk or satin that carves possible panty lines. Thongs & seamless undies are possible solutions.
