Stop getting ripped-off when shopping in street markets

I had recently visited Thailand (fortunately I got back before the protestors “invited” me to stay on at their famous Hotel a la Airport) and have bought some clothes at their famous street markets. I bought a dress at 650baht at Platinum Shopping Mall after bargaining for 10mins and I thought it was a good buy since the shop assistant wouldn’t budge from the price.

I asked for a business card and they had 2 other branches around the vicinity. As I was pleased with the buy and wanted to see if the other branches had more designs, I went to the branch across the street. To my horror, the other branch sold the same dress at 330baht!! That is like 1/2 the price!! Furthermore the other branch even gave me a totally new one. Man was I ripped-off!

If you happen to go shopping in Asian street markets, always look around at other shops or ask for a business card and visit the other branches before making the purchase. You can never be too careful especially when you are a foreigner.

A few more tips to note.

1. If you think it is too good to be true to find your latest Prada bag at 70% off in a street market, it probably is. If you look closely, it might be a Prata bag instead.

2. Always look at the fine print on the price tags or discount signs before buyng. You won’t want to be slapped with hidden costs after you hand over your money or worse your credit card.

3. In the street markets, most vendors will not put a price tag on their items. The prices are often related to your nationality. Thus never buy anything at face value. Always bargain.

4. Always check the goods before buying and make sure the shop assistant places the item you’ve checked into your shopping bag. Since there is no receipt given, it will be difficult to return any goods. Being a spectator of a sleight of hand here will cost you.

5. Stall owners can be very persistent. If you’re easily swayed by sweet words or influenced, it is advisable to have a companion who can drag you away at critical moments.
